Dictatorship is a ruler that is ruled by a individual, it is a form of government in which the dictator gains absolute power. This means the person in charge has complete control over everything. Dictators do not usually call themselves dictators, some dictators back in history called themselves the emperors or the kings and cruelly forces the people to obey them. Dictatorship was used by Stalin in the USSR. He used it in order to keep the belief of communism through the USSR. In order to retain his power as the leader of the USSR, Stalin created a secret police force named the NKVD, much like how Napoleon, the pig that represented Stalin in Animal Farm, used guard dogs to retain power. The purpose of including dictatorship in the book was to let George Orwell express his feelings about it and prove that the power they get will ultimately ruin the country, that the dictator will only use the power to benefit themselves instead of others. For example, Napoleon changed 3 rules in the "Seven Commandments" just so he can have a better life and that he can stay in power no matter what. The 3 rules changed was that No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets, No animal shall drink alcoholto excess, and No animal shall kill any other animal without cause. Obviously, the first 2 rules changed was so that he can sleep in beds inside Mr Jones house and that he can enjoy alcohol. The 3rd rule was changed so that he can kill animals that believed in Snowball so that he can retain the power he holds. George Orwell used this to represent the corruption Stalin had which was exactly the same as Napoleon."Characteristics of Dictatorship" 2010 "Animal Farm Dictatorship" 2009
